ANNUAL GRANT FOR UNDERGRADUATE SCOLARSHIPS

LONG-TERM HUMANITARIAN PROJECT OF THE ROTARY CLUB ZAGREB KAPTOL

Since its beginning the Annual Grant for Undergraduate Scholarships, one of the most successful and long-lasting humanitarian projects in Croatia that translates into English as Step into life (Korak u život), presents a chance for young adults without appropriate parental care to complete their tertiary education. It was initiated in 2008 by professor Josip Paladino, MD. The training of eight service dogs for blind and visually impaired persons was a short-term project that preceded the Annual Grant for Scholarships.

The project, which embodies the nature and foundation of Rotarian principles, promotes some of the highest social values - culture, education and social sensitivity. The importance of the project has also been recognized and supported by Croatian citizens, members of the business community and media, as well as by many established and influential members of Croatia’s public life who have been dedicating their time and effort time and time again to pursue this humanitarian goal.

Through the annual grant for scholarship we award the amount of HRK 1,600 each year for a period of five academic years. To secure the annual grant the grant recipient must meet a specific condition: enrolled student status by completing academic year sign-in. The application deadline is 1 November. The decision to award grants rests on the Club Directors within the period of 15 days after the closing date.

Rotary International

Rotary is an international organisation of professional and business leaders dedicated to humanitarian service. We encourage and promote high ethical standards in private and business life, and we advance goodwill and understanding in the world under the motto Service above Self.

Through our six main areas of focus - promoting peace, combating and treating disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, providing education, and growing local economies – as well as our club activities and humanitarian projects, Rotary clubs serve their communities on both local and global levels.

Rotary International (RI) is the world’s first service club – a voluntary not-for-profit organisation whose members are engaged in humanitarian projects with a view to providing humanitarian service for their communities. Currently there are more than 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.

Due to its humanitarian projects and programmes, such as PolioPlus and World Understanding and Peace, Rotary International is also an international NGO recognised by the UN.
Rotary International provides funds for its projects and programmes through the Rotary Foundation (RF). The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Foundation who share their vision of a better world.

From the first initial contribution Rotarians have donated more than USD 3 billion to the Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol

By beginning of 2007 our friend Ivo Husić, one of the founders and doyennes of Rotary in Croatia, took upon himself to set up from scratch another Rotary club in Zagreb, namely Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol.

Acting in his capacity as club initiator (”godfather”), he used his familiarity with organising members and the club set-up while drawing on his previous experience in starting the first Rotary club in the independent Republic of Croatia. Within only a couple of months, from what used to be an initial small membership basis, a greater membership emerged that enabled us to become a full Rotary club with an autonomous club status, led only by Rotary guiding principles of building goodwill and better friendships.

Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol relatively soon increased its membership. Having agreed that 40 is the perfect number for a club membership total, the club members stopped accepting new members when their number reached 20, thereby leaving the door open for new members that would join the club at some point after the Charter of 2008 because the club had already achieved its desired uniqueness. Uniqueness that constantly needs to be nurtured and sustained, which shows a great diversity in club membership, that is to say in variety of classifications, professions and vocations.

Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol was established in 2008. We have strived to encourage positive changes in our community eversince by setting examples and engaging ourselves in many short-term and long-term humanitarian projects.

Former presidents of the club:
  • 2008/09 - Zvonko Mesić

Rotary

There are many definitions, but the most common is the following:

Rotary is an international association of professional and business people who are dedicated to human goals, appreciating and promoting high ethical principles in business and private life, and broader goodwill and understanding in the world. Rotary needs to be distinguished from the Rotary International (RI), reflecting the world's organizational structure (clubs and districts in all parts of the world, and the Evanston, IL, USA headquarters).

Rotary International is the first worldwide "Service club" organization that currently has more than 1.2 million members in almost every country in the world. Among other things, RI is, due to its activities (such as "PolioPlus", "World Understanding and Peace", etc.), a non-governmental organization of international significance, also recognized by the UN.
Funding of projects and programs at Rotary International level is done through the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation is a non-profit organization funded exclusively by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and Foundation friends sharing a vision of the better world. From the first initial contribution Rotarians have donated more than $ 3 billion to the Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol

  • 2009/10 - Mladen Hrgarek

Natječaj za dodjelu stipendija Korak u život

Najdugovječnija humanitarna akcija u Hrvatskoj koju organizira Rotary klub Zagreb Kaptol i ove godine dodjeljuje stipendije djeci bez odgovarajuće roditeljske skrbi

Korak u život predstavlja prirodu i temelj rotarijanskog djelovanja, jer promovira najviše društvene vrijednosti  - kulturu, obrazovanje i socijalnu osjetljivost.

Rotary Club Zagreb Kaptol
